Chances are, you have had to move at one point in your life. Whether or not you have moved from an apartment to a house, a house to another house, or anything in between, you know that there are always plenty of things to get done while you prepare to move. A checklist can help you determine what you need to accomplish before you can call your new residence your own.
The first thing that you will want to do when preparing to move is determine how you are going to be getting your belongings to your new residence. If you are planning on moving them yourself, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to rent a truck. The same goes if you are planning on using a moving service. The earlier that you can reserve a truck or movers, the better off you will be. If you wait until a few weeks out, you may find yourself out of luck, or dealing with unfavorable times. Plan your move well out in advance and adjust your schedule as necessary.
After you have your logistics planned out, you will want to begin packing. It is a good idea to start packing early. The more that you can do before the move, the better. It may be a good time for you to start discarding clothing, furniture and other items you do not need or use. You can donate gently used items to any variety of charities and services, so taking an honest inventory will be worth your while. Maybe you have excess dishes that you do not use, you can donate those and if you need, you can always upgrade to new ones with a stop to Hudson’s Bay. Similarly with clothing, if you have a large amount of clothes you no longer wear, donating them can clear up plenty of space allowing you to use that space on other items you use more. The more that you can pack early, or discard, will give you peace of mind and a lower workload as the moving day gets closer.
Finally, you will want to take the time to finish up any paperwork before you move. Mostly, this will contain of setting up a forwarding address for your mail and changing the addresses for your many accounts. Many banks and credit card companies will allow you to change your billing address online, but some may need you to visit a physical branch to make the change. Changing your mailing address can be done online or in person, but it is a good idea to change that in the days before your move to ensure all mail is delivered to the right address.
Moving can be physically and mentally taxing. If you take the time to plan your move out and start working early, you can lessen your workload considerably. This not only will allow you to reduce your stress, but actually let you get to work on moving day cleaning your old residence and unpacking in your new spot.
